Manatees by kecen Manatees by kecen
The manatees are behind the rise of the Stellanarsi as a starfaring civilization.

They like to lounge, puff perfume, and think deep thoughts and scorn movies which are anti-intellectual. They are vegetarians for the most part, or maybe they slurp up sunbeams like space unicorns. Magic oats are really mustard from a bottle, you know.

The most likely explanation for their appearance is that their true appearance is incomprehensible or harmful to the brain structure of carbon-based lifeforms.

This is watercolour painting with pastels and coloured pencils. I used a reference picture, if you can figure out which one.

Too cute! I like the splashes of color and etched-looking patterns on the manatees, it makes them look all the more vibrant. :D

Beautifully done as usual, they really do seem like they are floating in water, the subtle yet boldly coloured background curls only adds to this effect, can almost imagine them twisting in the water :)

That was the effect I intended :)

This was for a class; I tried new techniques on this one, including salt.

Ohhh I think I know what you mean, the one where you do a watery colour wash and sprinkle the salt crystals onto the page? That gives a great effect. You should try it on silk painting too!
Another good one to give the effect of water is to put cling film over a colour wash, let it wrinkle up naturally, leave until dry and when you pull it off there should be ripples like the reflections in water. :)

Beautiful picture btw. I'm tempted to say you've outdone yourself, but honestly, most of your works lately have this delightful quality to them.

Art class, if not the art class where one is made to draw very difficult subjects, helped me :)

Cool. :> My design class pushes me past my limits at times. It's only meant as a part of my furniture design course, but it really improves my drawing.

If I had the ability to critique, I would say:

kecen has a gift for bringing her drawings to life through a combination of easy, accurate lines, and deeply interesting colours mixed with an aesthetic complexity that is her own, and Manatees is no exception to this unique recipe. We are given a realistic, yet somehow surreal, impression of the creatures, from their smooth, textured skin which is almost tangible in weight, to the way those dark eyes peer from the plump, curved flesh of their face. It's hard to explain how kecen can reproduce such a heavyweight being on a flaired, colourful background outside the realm of their natural environment and still give the impression of gently floating, but her knack for this realistic imitation, combined with her personal "alien" flair -- those elegant curves etched into their sides and underneath, a simple touch which gives the creatures more semblance of intelligence and personality than their true forms would allow -- makes for an interesting and truly delightful picture to gaze upon. Even more endearing is that all of kecen's subjects come with a descriptive history, as though she has met these creatures of her imagination, and is now sharing with you their story in vivid colour.

I highly recommend browsing kecen's gallery. Rarely does her art fail to bring some thought or wonder to my mind, and I find myself looking upon her works with interest and a warm fondness for some time.

Omg this is just gorgeous. I lovee all the texture going on and the backround really helps bring the manatees out. :aww: I also like the markings around the sides of the manatees; very unique. This piece looks like it was a lot of fun to paint, judgin by all the different colours and techniques and such that you've used. :aww: Amazing work! :D
